Zip screens
Exterior screens for stack doors in Parkhurst
Zip-guided screens that stop extension heat at the opening — mesh keeps the garden view and the insects out.

The zip screen is what turned patios into rooms. Mesh or clear PVC is held drum-tight in zipped aluminium side channels, so the fabric cannot billow, flap or blow out of its track. Fitted over the stack doors of a rear extension, it does the one thing an interior blind cannot: it intercepts the sun on the outside of the glass, before that energy ever becomes heat in your living room.
What it does for a Parkhurst extension
- Cuts the solar gain that turns a north or west-facing addition into a hot box by mid-afternoon.
- Keeps the garden in view — a sunscreen mesh shades without blinding you to the outside.
- Seals the opening against wind and insects, which makes a stoep usable at dusk in summer.
- Clear PVC turns the same structure into a winter room without losing the light.
Practical notes
- Motorisation is standard on wide spans, and we recommend a wind sensor on any exposed corner so the screen retracts itself before a highveld storm.
- Single screens run wide, so big openings need few joins.
- Channels and headboxes are colour-matched to the frames or the wall, so the hardware disappears when the screen is up.
- The fixing surface matters: brick, plaster and steel posts all take different anchors. That gets decided on site, not over the phone.
Where an opening needs something heavier — full blackout, or shading that shuts the room down completely — a roller shutter does the same job in rigid aluminium. Those are shading shutters, not security-rated shutters; a security-rated product is a different specification we can quote on request.

Fitting zip screens across the neighbourhood
Wherever a rear extension turns into a hot box by mid-afternoon, an exterior screen over the stack doors is usually the first thing we quote.
